Snowstorms and Air Conditioners

March 17, 2016

We haven’t completely escaped winter in Greater Richmond just yet. Mother Nature has provided us with a few nice days, but she’s always prepped to remind us that she’s in charge. So when she does finally let up and it starts to warm up, read below so you won’t want to have to unexpectedly call us for out for air conditioner service.

Heavy snowfall could bury your air conditioner in the snow, diminishing its performance when the temperatures finally warm up for the season. Not to mention it can keep a high-efficiency system from operating as such. The situation could become an even greater problem too if you don’t prepare for it with an annual air conditioner service appointment.

There are things you can do as a homeowner to help your air conditioner work properly even though snow has fallen or could fall in the coming days and weeks.

  1. Maintain a 3-foot/1-meter clearance around your air conditioner. Check the area routinely to make sure that it stays clear and that there are no snow drifts or piles of debris that may have built up throughout the winter.
  2. Contrary to what you may think, putting a cover over your air conditioner might end up doing more damage than you’d expect. A covered air conditioner can be inviting for rodents looking for shelter from the weather and start to call it home, possibly meaning damage to the system as they roam about.

While the weather in Greater Richmond will probably fluctuate up and down over the last few days of cold weather, you can’t count out the possibility of weather that can impact the performance of your air conditioner. At Herman Allen Plumbing, Heating & Cooling in Greater Richmond, we are always available to check any areas around your home or answer any of your questions, whether they’re in regards to air conditioner service or buying a new system.
