Using Your Fan and Air Conditioner in Greater Richmond

The weather is finally getting warmer and soon you could have to turn over to your air conditioner. Along with arranging your annual air conditioner service with the team at Herman Allen Plumbing, Heating & Cooling, there are a number of other tasks you can do to keep cozy and save money throughout the year.

During the in-between season in Greater Richmond, those far too few spring days, you may use ceiling fans to keep cool. Did you know that operating your ceiling fan along with your air conditioner might not only keep you more comfortable during the warmer days, but also save you money? In order to do that you have to be sure you’re using ceiling fans and your air conditioning correctly. Here’s a couple things to keep in mind:

Raise Your Thermostat

This is where the cost savings can have the chance to come in. If you aren’t raising your thermostat you won’t be saving on your expenses. Raising your thermostat by a couple degrees, in addition to using your ceiling fan, shouldn’t impact your comfort level too much. For every degree you raise your temperature, you’re lowering the length of the “on” cycle of your air conditioner.

Adjust Air Direction

Ceiling fans have a clockwise and counterclockwise setting to change dependent on the season. During the warmer months you’ll want to make sure the air is blowing down. You can stand below the fan to see if you feel a breeze. If you don’t, switch the direction. Ceiling fans do not actually decrease the air temperature, but they make you feel cooler. It’s the wind chill effect. You’ll feel cooler than the temperature shown on the thermostat.

Turn Off Fan When You’re Not There

Treat your ceiling fan like you do lights, turn it off when leaving a room. If no one is in the room to take in the wind chill that a fan offers you’re wasting energy by running your fan. Remember, a fan doesn’t actually cool your air, it just moves your air.
